Ross’ last UK production was Dick Whittington in which he played one of the leading roles ‘ Toby MacWiry’. Dick Whittington was described as London’s musical for the millennium at the Sadlers Wells Theatre in the West End of London. This production was directed by Gillian Lynne (‘Cats’ and ‘The Phantom of the Opera’) and was nominated for a prestigious Laurence Olivier Award.
Ross has also played ‘ Frank N Furter’ in the 25 th Anniversary Tour of The Rocky Horror Show and starred in and hosted Night of Stars at the world famous London Palladium. He also created the role of ‘ Wallace’in the musical Summer Holiday from the World Premiere in Blackpool, through the National Tour, to London’s Apollo Theatre. Other theatre includes lead roles in Charley’s Aunt, Joseph, Butterfly Children, Guys and Dolls and She Stoops to Conquer. Television work includes Taggart and other films include Comfort and Joy and The Girl in the Picture.
TV
On our TV screens his network career started after being chosen from over 3,600 hopefuls to host ITV’s Young Krypton and since then he has presented nearly thirty television series for BBC, ITV and SKY. From game shows to Children’s TV, from documentaries to human interest programmes, Ross’s shows have included Holiday, The Ross King Show, Hot Chefs, The 8.15 from Manchester, King of the Road, Run the Gauntlet, Quiz Night, and for five years he hosted the BBC’s live daily lunchtime show Pebble Mill. His years on Pebble Mill involved flying round the world filming in Europe, America, the Caribbean and South Africa, hosting TV specials from the Oscars and Cannes Film Festivals. His relaxed and informal style has resulted in some of the best interviews with many of the world’s biggest stars, including Robin Williams, Arnold Schwarzenneger, Catherine Zeta Jones, Clint Eastwood, Charlton Heston, Shirley MacLaine, Sean Connery, Boyzone, Elton John and George Michael. Never one to miss an opportunity, he has also “sung and danced” with Diana Ross, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds. His worldwide interviews were recognised with an award from the Variety Club of Great Britain.
Radio
On radio, Ross became Britain’s youngest presenter on Scotland’s Radio Clyde, winning many awards in the process, including a prestigious Sony Award. He has presented thousands of radio shows, including his own show on London’s Capital Radio and the Euro Chart for the UK. On BBC Radio 5 he presented a host of other shows, including the first ever series of Fantasy Football and received another Sony Award for his coverage of the Olympics in Barcelona. On the UK’s national Talk Radio he has presented OK to Talk and Ross King’s Sportstars. Although he’s is America, he continues to present a weekly show on Radio Clyde called The King in LA.
Other talents
As well as the above, Ross writes comedy scripts, does TV and Radio voiceovers, presents corporate conferences and plays football - he turned his back on a professional career for the lure of showbusiness… and the fact that he wasn’t very good!
