Sheryl Gascoigne

Sheryl Gascoigne became the most famous footballer’s wife in Britain (in the days before the Beckhams!) when she married the most idolised footballer of his generation, Paul Gascoigne. Although married for a short time, for nearly twenty years Sheryl was the person that knew Paul best and witnessed first hand his mission of self-destruction for much of that time.

In 2008, Sheryl made the critically acclaimed Channel 4 documentary called Surviving Gazza. After years of trying to help Paul and distressed by his OCD behaviour, she decided to make one last attempt to save her former husband from alcoholic oblivion. Following Sheryl and her children as Paul returned home to live with them after 6 weeks sectioned under the mental health act, this intimate film chartered their desperate battle to help him. Sheryl failed to save Paul but she did succeed in saving herself and her children.

Even though Sheryl has a busy schedule with her presenting and modelling Sheryl always makes time to raise awareness of domestic violence.

Sheryl is closely involved with the woman’s domestic violence charity Refuge and undertakes a lot of public speaking on their behalf at events across the country.

She has also worked alongside the Metropolitan Police to raise awareness of domestic violent and to effect change, alongside Cherie Blair and now Harriett Harman.

Her autobiography Stronger is unflinching in its detail of physical and mental abuse, it is a moving portrait of what it means to love and live with an addict who is on a mission of self-destruction. In finally voicing her side of the story, she is not only putting her demons to bed – she is also dispelling the myths about domestic violence and giving hope to the millions of women who are victim of this crime on a daily basis
